When it comes to taking care of babies, while some is just as it was when you were a baby, a lot has changed. Safety has become a bigger part of the equation as we’ve learned that some of the old practices cost infants their lives.
That means no blankets or quilts on or under a baby. It means no over-dependence on baby monitors. It means knowing that the rules for cribs have changed and that what was OK even two years ago may not be OK today.
Crib recall after crib recall in recent years has made it clear that it is no longer OK to just use the same crib you used five years ago or that the hand-me-down bassinet will be safe.
To help parents and caregivers, I put together a guide for safe sleep for Parents magazine’s website Parents.com, where I am the child safety expert.
The following topics are covered:
- cribs
- crib interiors
- baby monitors
- toddler beds
